In Case You Missed ‘Em: Reptar

For those of you born to Amish parents (Sean), “Reptar” is the name of Tommy Pickles’ favorite plush Godzilla-shaped toy on Nickelodeon’s Rugrats. It’s also the name of this post’s focus, Athens, GA-based Reptar. Legend has it, lead singer Graham Ulicny initially suggested Invisible Boyfriend, which the other members thought was the dumbest band name they had ever heard, so they settled on Reptar, the second-dumbest name they had ever heard. These guys have it all: smooth, dreamy synths, thumping bass, fresh vocals, and interesting guitar lines. Also, their live shows look like the best time.

Reptar’s somewhat-recent release Body Faucet is well worth a few listens, with standout jams “Sebastian,” “Houseboat Babies,” “Isoprene Bath,” and the album’s best tune, “Thank You Gilese 370 b.” (A quick web search revealed that Gilese 370 b is an exoplanet orbiting the star Gilese 370. The more you know!)  Check out their KXEP live performance of “Thank You Gliese 370 b”  below along with some of  of Body Faucet’s  standouts.

For those of you looking to go deeper, check out their debut EP Oblange Fizz Y’all. Great name, great collection of upbeat electro-tinged pop-rock jams, including my favorite offering from the band, “Stuck In My Id.” This is the song, dear reader, that got me hooked on these guys, and I think you’ll see why. “Blastoff” is a close second.
