The accomplished electronic music act, Hot Chip, have recently released “Huarache Lights,” the first single off their upcoming LP, Why Makes Sense?. First of all, if you—like me—thought the title “Huarache Lights” was foreign and had some deep, symbolic meaning, you’d be half right. Huarache Lights is the name of a type of retro Nike sneaker being brought back this year, which, though a hilariously commonplace concept, is an interesting fit for the song’s theme of growing older and more replaceable. Acoustically, this is a dense song, layered with ever-varying blips, synth jabs, and incomprehensible robot voices. The mood shifts twice to cloudier, harsher settings, but there is plenty of sunny robot walking if that’s what you’re searching for. “Huarache Lights” provides plenty to turn over in your head, lyrically and sonically, if you’re into that too.
