One band very near and dear to our hearts here at Time to Pop is Vulfpeck. Classifying themselves as a “German Rhythm Section” they primarily stick to making instrumental tracks… with real instruments. Vulfpeck is perhaps the funkiest group we have ever come across. In addition to being an extremely talented group of musicians, Vulfpeck is goofy as hell, and pulled off a genius scam on Spotify in order to fund a free tour for their fans.
Without a doubt, our favorite Vulfpeck song is their December release “Christmas in L.A (feat. David T. Walker)”. This hook-laden funk jam is meant to accompany days when you’re swimmin’ in good vibes and on top of the world (while celebrating Christmas, of course). The song begins with exactly the bright, thumping groove you’d want from a Vulfpeck track, and then the drummer comes in singing like he’s a member of the Jackson 5. The chorus brings the song to its energetic best and offers a hook I personally guarantee will be stuck in your head shortly after your first listen. Enjoy:
As far as Vulfpeck’s instrumentals go, “Barbara” is certainly a standout. The bass line, cowbell, keyboard, and drums blend seamlessly together. You’d think the song couldn’t get any better until the guys are joined by a recording of a Steve Jobs interview on “inherent human abilities” from god knows what year. The funk continues through a couple takes from Steve, and ends with some thoughts on VisiCalc’s impact on his career. Have a watch:
